Racial Killing in the Open

The interahamwe killed in broad daylight, in the open, on the streets, wherever they caught their victims. The killers made no attempt to hide their racial hatred or slaughter of the Tutsis. Above, a victim is beaten by a man in a military uniform with an AK-47.

Refugees

By the time the RPF had generally restored order, over two million people, including many of the Hutu extremists and killers, had fled Rwanda into neighbouring countries. By the time the international community had woken up to what was happening in Rwanda, its attention was focused not on the dead, the wounded and the bereaved survivors within Rwanda but on the humanitarian disaster taking place across the borders.

The media’s reporting of the refugee crisis generated a huge outpouring of sympathy and assistance, but the public did not realise that many of the people they were helping with compassion were those who had shown no mercy as killers just months before. In fact, some of the refugee camps were even run by leaders of the genocide and remnants of the former Rwandan army.
