The International Media

If the international community turned a blind eye to what was really happening in Rwanda, the international media did little better in their coverage of the situation.

The outside world's press, radio and TV followed the Rwandan government's portrayal of the killings as due to tribal enmity and war with the Rwandan Patriotic Front or RPF. By depicting the situation as merely 'tribal anarchy', the media played into the hands of the killers, concealing the reality of a deliberate, planned and systematic genocide. It is not surprising, then, that many outsiders saw the refugees as victims, rather than perpetrators, of one of the worst crimes against humanity.

Sadly, even though it is now recognised that the international community was misled about what was really happening in Rwanda, that same international community has done little to support the survivors of the atrocities.
