Name: Denis
Date of Birth: 1988
My father died in the genocide in 1994 and my mother
died in 1996 of a certain sickness that I do not remember.
The house we are living in was built for us by an organisation
that helps us.
The killers came and attacked our neighbours first;
when my father saw this he fled the house immediately
because he knew he was on the list of the people to
be killed. He was later caught and killed.
There was chaos everywhere so I got my little brother,
strapped him on my back and fled the house. Soon after
that a war of bullets started. We fled to where our
maternal grandparents lived and spent a week there.
My grandfather chased us away saying that we were collaborating
with the Inkotanyi soldiers. By now the war was over
so we came and lived in a mud house, we then got the
help to build this house.
We were also helped to get food and some animals to
rear. We live on subsistence farming and the plot of
land we have is small and cannot provide for our food
needs. We had a piece of land before but the district
gave it to the communal settlement scheme 'Imidugudu'
and we lost that too.
In addition to providing the iron sheets for this house
and the other construction materials, the organisation
also provides medicine when we are sick; this, though,
has stopped for the last 5 months. They also used to
provide foodstuffs.
I would never forgive them; if my father and mother
were here, I would not be out of school trying to look
after my brother and sister. I am suffering terribly
now because I lost my parents and remember I am only
15.
Some organisations have been helpful but it is not
enough. I would like to thank the organisation that
gave me two goats because now they have multiplied to
four.
