Survivors Fund Announces the Success of its Christmas Campaign: One Month to Save the Life of One Woman

London – 18th January 2005

The Rwandan Survivors Fund (SURF) is pleased to announce that its December campaign, One Month to Save the Life of One Woman has raised over £6,000. This sum will be supplemented by SURF to provide anti-retroviral treatment for the next ten years. It amounts to donations from over 1000 people, each who were asked to contribute just £5 to help reach the campaign target.

The Director of SURF, Mary Kayitesi-Blewitt, expressed her gratitude:

“The support that we have received for this campaign, and throughout our Ten Years On commemoration, has been incredible. In light of the recent Tsunami disaster, it is even more amazing that we have raised so much.” Mary added: “The money will enable us to add one more woman to the 22 that we are already supporting with much needed treatment, providing security for more women and their children. However, we must not stop there. We have to continue to work towards making treatment accessible to all those women and children in Rwanda who are still suffering as a result of HIV/AIDS.”

One Month to Save the Life of One Woman was launched on 1st December, World AIDS Day, the theme being: Women, Girls, HIV and AIDS. It is estimated that over 25,000 women in Rwanda were raped and deliberately infected by an HIV+ genocidaires during the 1994 genocide. Many are now dying from AIDS related illnesses. But it costs only £75 a month to provide critical access to the antiretroviral drugs that enables these women, many who are solely responsible for orphans of the genocide, to lead a healthy and economically active life again.
